IU Campus Recreational Sports has worked all spring to prepare the IU Outdoor Pool for summer, after taking over management of the pool in January.

The IU Outdoor Pool will host a free open house at the pool from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, with swimming and food.

"We're really excited to have this opportunity," said Emily Ward, program director for Aquatics at Campus Recreational Sports. "The IU Outdoor Pool is a great facility, and we bring a lot of expertise and experience to make the pool even better."

Enter to win

IU faculty and staff using a valid IU email address can enter to win a family season pass ($180 value) to the IU Outdoor Pool. The season pass, valid from May 24 to September 1, covers two adults and all children under age 18 in the same household.

Working with staff from the IU Physical Plant, Recreational Sports has overseen improvements that include painting the inside and outside of the facility, improving the floor in the bath house and installing new lights. A new shade structure is being added and some of the deck furniture is being replaced.

"The IU Outdoor Pool is known for great customer service and high quality swim lessons, and that's all going to continue," Ward said. "Our goals are the same ones that have made the Outdoor Pool such a popular facility: providing superior service to create an enjoyable experience for participants."

Ward said the IU Outdoor Pool fills a special niche in Bloomington. While the pool welcomes a younger crowd, it also caters to adults by offering five lanes for swimming laps as well as a diving area and instructional pool for swimming lessons.

"The outdoor pool is great for adults but also perfect for families," Ward said. "Adults can swim laps or just relax and know that their kids are safe and having fun."

Now that the pool is under the management of Recreational Sports, Ward sees many opportunities for innovative programming, such as water volleyball and battleship -- a game where canoe-bound teams try to sink each other's "ships" by dousing them with buckets of water.

The IU Outdoor Pool season officially opens May 24 and remains open through September 1. Find fee and age policy information and schedules for the pool online.
